Steps to Recovery for Non Emergency Heat Exposure
• Move to a cool place: Get out of the heat and find a cool, shaded area or air-conditioned space.
• Rest and relax: Lie down and elevate the legs to improve circulation.
• Hydrate: Drink cool fluids like water or sports drinks to replace lost fluids and electrolytes.
• Cool down: Remove excess clothing, use cool cloths or a fan, or take a cool shower or bath.
• Monitor symptoms: Watch for any worsening symptoms like confusion, vomiting, or a rapid heartbeat, and seek medical attention if necessary.
• Gradual return to activity: Avoid strenuous activity until fully recovered. Return to normal activity gradually,and be mindful of heat and humidity.
• Recovery Time: Typical recovery time is 24-48 hours. Exercise caution in returning to work in the event of a heat stroke as it may take longer for the body to recover.
When to Seek Medical Help
• If the person is confused, disoriented, or unconscious.
• If they are unable to drink or are vomiting.
• If their symptoms worsen or don’t improve after 30 minutes of cooling and hydration.
• If they have a very high temperature, hot skin that is not sweating, or a fast heartbeat.
• If they have any other concerning symptoms like seizures or breathing problems.
